We are delighted once again to be directed by John Powell, who has a long and successful association with the festival.
He has been involved in music in Manchester for 40 years - initially on the staff at Chetham’s and as a member of the BBC Northern Singers, more recently as a freelance conductor, singer and singing teacher. He conducts the Festival Choir and the Phoenix Choir in Bolton, and has his own chamber group: the John Powell Singers. He has been Musical Director of the Tatton Singers since 2005. He teachers privately and at the University of York, and is also very active as a festival adjudicator.
John particularly enjoys preparing singers for special events. He directs workshops and singing days - the past years’ activities have ranged from a Bach Motet with an 8 voice consort, to Beethoven’s Mass in C with 120 singers. He also conducts the chamber choir course at the annual summer school in Sherborne, Dorset.
As a singer, John performs in recitals and oratorio, and is always keen to explore new and unusual repertoire. He has recently performed Schubert’s great song cycle
Winterreise as well as taking the baritone roles in Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius and Mendelssohn’s Elijah.
